Engineers without Borders: Drexel Chapter

Engineers withouth Borders (EWB) is a non-profit organization dedicated to improving the quality of life for impoverished communities through the implementation of environmentally and economically sustainable engineering projects. EWB-USA connects student chapters commited long term with communities to help them with their engineering needs. Projects completed by student chapters include: Sustainable Water Technologies (Santisuk, Thailand), Drinkable Water and Micro Irrigation(Yoro District, Honduras), Electrical System Development (Orissa, India).

Drexel's Chapter will begin working with Rowan University's EWB chapter to learn the ropes of travel planning, site assessment and project implementation.

CAEE Department Recieves GAANN Award from the Department of Education

Dr. Chuck Haas, Department Head of Civil, Architerctectural and Environmental Engineering. Along with Co-PIs include Drs. Franklin Moon, Jin Wen, Patrick Gurian, Agami Reddy, Emin Aktan, Mohana Shankar, Tony Hu (IST) and Mun Choi has recieved several doctoral fellowship positions available through the “Educating Renaissance Engineers” GAANN Fellowship program. Motivated by the societal challenges associated with our ailing urban infrastructure, this program aims to develop a new category of CAE Engineers - renaissance CAE Engineers - capable of effectively educating future infrastructure managers. In addition to being well-versed in traditional CAE paradigms, such renaissance engineers will be capable of exploiting ongoing technological advancements as well as communicating information to support decisions of the non-technical stewards of critical infrastructures. Amount of award: $504,000

Regina Cagle Cyles Across US for Hurricane Katrina Relief

Environmental Engineering student Regina Cagle whose family had to evacuate their home due to Hurricane Katrina, will cycle across the country from Florida to California to help the rebuilding efforts for the victims of the hurricane.

Cagle, along with Russell Goodman (Drexel) and three students from the University of Texas and Rice University will begin their cycling tour in Florida on June 5, 2006. On their way to New Orleans, they will volunteer in local churches and organizations to restore homes and communities destroyed by Hurricane Katrina. After their stop at New Orleans, the volunteers will continue fundraising on their way to San Francisco.

The organization, “Texans Cycling America for Rebuilding Efforts” or Texans C.A.R.E has set a fundraising goal of $15,000, which will be donated to the organizations for which they volunteer during their tour. Donations to help fund the tour and help the Katrina victims can be made online at http://www.texansCARE.org or mailed to
